One of the downsides in AI getting so good is that it is getting harder to demonstrate its strengths and weaknesses at the frontier. Yes, Astra and Fable can research and write good papers in an academic field. No, they are not as good as top humans (yet?), but you have to know the field to know why

Between the PRs of (largely likely stolen) math breakthroughs, claims of "rogue AI" (actually cybercrimes by companies, but whatevs), and doomerist "whistleblowers", it feels like we've been subjected to a gish gallop of hype recently. >>

Here's the thing. We do not, under any circumstances, have to hand it to them. No common cause with TESCREALists, no platforming their nonsense as if it had any value, no picking up the Overton window and carrying it over to them.

This week brought some of the clearest statements we've heard from both Anthropic & OpenAI that some form of recursive self-improvement has been achieved, though it still sounds early RSI would cause a rapid gain in AI ability & the first firms to RSI may get an unsurmountable lead

A great read. I have similar feelings about how AI labs approach progress directly and without nurturing of scientific communities & intuition. The math research community went through the transition the fastest, so it was felt most. Other fields next. terrytao.wordpress.com/2026/09/11/a...

Here's a automated forecasting system to estimate catastrophic risk from some major experts on forecasting. The models predicts the chance of an AI-generated mass catastrophe as 0.47% by 2030 (with a 1.1% chance of a catastrophe by 2030 with any cause). airo.forecastingresearch.org
